What is Spirituality?

It is very difficult to put into words what ‘spirituality’ actually is because it is a very personal experience. It differs from person to person, and often spirituality changes within people during their lifetime. Spirituality is not the same as having a religion or faith; a person can be spiritual without having a particular faith.

As a school, we have defined spirituality using the David Hayes definition:

“relational awareness, knowing and relating to myself, knowing and relating to others and knowing and relating to the wider world.”

We believe spirituality, being able to reflect and wonder, strongly underpins our vision, ‘We live life in all its fullness’ John 10.10.

Spiritual Development at Torre C of E Academy

Torre Academy is a Church of England School that is committed to supporting the exploration of the Christian faith and values, whilst being open to other faiths, beliefs and values. Pupils’ spiritual development is shown by their:

  • Beliefs, religious or otherwise, which inform their perspective on life and their interest in and respect for different people’s feeling and values

  • Sense of enjoyment and fascination in learning about themselves, others and the world around them, including the intangible

  • Use of imagination and creativity in their learning

  • Willingness to reflect on their experiences

  • Character development through the opportunities provided as part of our unique curriculum

What might this look like?
You will see pupils exploring life’s big questions through the learning enquiry approach to our curriculum. Children will develop the skill of reflection from the earliest starting point and have opportunities to use this skill each day.

‘Windows, mirrors and doors’ is the terminology our school uses with the pupils to support deeper reflections.
