English as an Additional Language (EAL)

EAL stands for English as an Additional Language. It refers to pupils who are learning English while also using another language at home. This term encompasses a diverse group of learners with various linguistic backgrounds who need support to acquire English alongside their first language.

At Torre C of E Academy, we proudly embrace the rich diversity of our school community. Our EAL provision supports children in developing their English skills with confidence and care. We celebrate every child’s unique background, fostering a sense of belonging through inclusive teaching and personalised support where necessary. By nurturing both language and identity, we help all learners thrive—academically, socially, and emotionally—in a warm, welcoming, and respectful environment.

We currently sit below just below National average of EAL pupils at Torre, however we sit significantly above the local average (6%). This is something that makes our community very special

EAL learners may face challenges related to language acquisition, but it's important to note that EAL is not classified as Special Educational Needs & Disability (SEND). However, some EAL learners might also have specific learning needs that require additional support.

Our EAL provision aims to support these students by:

  • Helping them acquire English language skills.

  • Acknowledging and valuing their home language and culture.

  • Providing tailored support to help them access the curriculum.

  • Encouraging participation and inclusion.

EAL children, who are needing additional support in their learning, are assessed against the Proficiency in English scale. From this assessment, tailored support is implemented.19.1% of the children at Torre have English as an additional language.

Every half term, our EAL children are given the opportunity to get together with each other to form connections and socialise. Each year, we hold a cultural diversity day. At Torre, we recognise the importance of celebrating the cultural diversity within our school. This helps everyone to feel valued and part of our society. It helps our children to learn about different cultures, celebrating similarities and differences. It enables our EAL children to feel proud of their heritage.
